Core to Core Jump is a method of travel.

Summary[ | ]

The Core to Core Jump technique consists in transitioning to the next galaxy via its centre and landing directly in the next galaxy core area. This is achieved by passing through a Black Hole in the core area of the starting galaxy, immediately reaching a Gateway system and then warping to the Galaxy Centre as usual. The spawning point coordinates in the next galaxy will be exactly the same as the black hole exit coordinates.

History[ | ]

This innovative technique for traveling through galaxies was originally discovered by DJLemon-HouseM. It was further explored and refined by InExCor explorers.

In May 2020 Ygolnac with the aid of Peacebomb refined and published this technique after a month of research.

Initially it was thought that giving birth to a Star using an Atlas Interface and the Heart of the Sun blueprint was necessary, but it was determined that simply passing through a black hole was the only prerequisite to do a Core to Core Jump. This allows the most recent theory concerning the Atlas influence to be discarded and assumes that some hidden properties of the Hyperdrive technology are in place. Possibly the device itself gets hypercharged for short periods of time after passing through a black hole.

Ironically, this method of travel was discovered only a couple of months after InExCor CEO Peacebomb traversed all the 255 galaxies in the old way, navigating each from the spawn rim to the core.

Data[ | ]

This technique has been tested as follows:

Tested 29th Oct 2022, working:

  • Use the Hyperdrive (and Black Holes, and whatever other tricks) to get to within 10,000 light-years of the Galaxy Centre.
    • S-Class Explorer ships are best for this because they have the longest Hyperdrive range, but an Exotic will do the trick as well.
  • If you plan on transiting several galaxies, there are some things you will want to stock up to keep from getting stuck scrounging for materials:
    • Absolutely Required: Ferrite Dust, Carbon and/or Carbon Nanotubes, Ion Batteries, Wiring Looms, Chromatic Metal, and Condensed Carbon.
    • Optionally Recommended: Warp Cells, Oxygen, and Starship Launch Fuel.
      • The process of transiting a Galaxy Centre will break ALL Starship technology, ALL Exosuit technology except basic systems, and ALL Multi-tool technology. This will happen every time you transit a Galaxy Centre. Fixing everything that is broken is NOT necessary if you plan to continue jumping through galaxies, but there are a few things that WILL need to be fixed to ensure a smooth transition from galaxy to galaxy.
      • Ferrite Dust, Carbon, Condensed Carbon, and Oxygen will be fairly easy to collect while you travel.
      • The Ferrite Dust is mainly to repair the Mining Beam, and Carbon Nanotubes are needed to repair the Analysis Visor. These are "bare minimum functionality" that you won't want to be stuck without. Carbon is also handy for keeping the Mining Tool fueled up.
      • Condensed Carbon may be needed to create Hermetic Seals, which will allow you to repair your Advanced Mining Laser. This will in turn allow you to mine the larger Condensed Carbon crystals.
      • When you arrive in a new galaxy, you may be on a hazardous planet/moon; Ion Batteries will help keep your hazard protection charged while you are on the surface.
      • Don't bother with Warp Hypercores. Transiting a Galaxy Centre doesn't actually consume much of your Hyperdrive fuel, so Warp Hypercores are overkill. Save your Storm Crystals.
      • Depending on how many galaxies you want to travel through, you may go through a LOT of Warp Cells, and they don't stack very high. The Condensed Carbon and Chromatic Metal are mainly for making Antimatter, and Oxygen and Ferrite Dust are mainly for making Antimatter Housings. Antimatter and Antimatter Housings can then be used to make Warp Cells.
  • If possible, equip all types of Exosuit Hazard Protection upgrades too. Only one of each is needed, but they will all be needed for transits across multiple galaxies.
  • Locate a nearby Black Hole and pass through it.
    • This will not take you much closer to the Galaxy Centre, but it's the crux of the "Core to Core Jump" process. Passing through a Black Hole here saves a sort of "bookmark" which serves as the arrival location (near the Galaxy Centre) in the next galaxy.
    • Completing The Atlas Path helps, as all systems with Black Holes will be revealed in the galaxy map.
    • Specialist Polo can also give you the coordinates of a nearby Black Hole.
  • Use the Hyperdrive to continue to a "Gateway" system.
    • Gateway systems are systems that have a direct connection to the Galaxy Centre.
      • These will not always be yellow star systems. Be sure your Hyperdrive is upgraded so that it can travel to any colour star system.
      • If you need services/materials from your Freighter, be sure it is also upgraded so that it can travel to any color star system (or be sure to finish with it before travelling to the Gateway system).
  • In the Galaxy Map, select "Galaxy Centre" as the Destination.
    • A path will show you the way to the Galaxy Centre, and it should definitively end at a specific system (as opposed to just going on forever and fading out as it does). Follow the path to its end.
    • If the path does go off the screen, de-select the current system and look where the path leads. If it leads to the Galaxy Centre, you're already in a Gateway system. DON'T TRAVEL TO THE GALAXY CENTRE YET!
  • OPTIONAL: If you want to minimize repair costs when you reach your destination galaxy, select a disposable Multi-tool and Starship. If you do this, you'll definitely need Starship Launch Fuel, but you won't need to repair them.
    • Due to the aforementioned damage from transiting the Galaxy Centre, these can act as "Whipping Boys" that can soak up the damage, while your daily-driver equipment is safely tucked away. Unselected Multi-tools and Starships don't suffer any damage.
  • Make sure your Hyperdrive is full of fuel. Depending on how upgraded your Hyperdrive is, this fuel will barely be consumed by transiting the Galaxy Centre, but a full Hyperdrive is required.
  • Transit the Galaxy Centre.
    • For some weird reason, the Galaxy Centre isn't directly selectable like other systems are. Instead, in the Galaxy Map, ensure the current system is selected. Set the Galactic Centre as a Destination, which highlights the path to the Galaxy Centre. Move the cursor along the path to the Galaxy Centre. A ring reticle will appear in the direction of the Galaxy Centre; hold the action button (left-mouse click on PC) to see a ring-fill meter begin filling around the ring reticle. Once the ring-fill meter is full, the Galaxy Centre will be selected. Again, hold the action button to Warp to the Galaxy Centre.
  • A long cut-scene will play out simulating leaving the current galaxy and entering a new one. You will arrive on a new planet/moon on foot (similar to the new-player experience), the aforementioned technology will be damaged (don't worry, it's cool), and the Starship will be nowhere in sight.
    • Usually, the planet/moon will have a hazardous (hot/cold/toxic/radioactive) condition, so having these upgrades equipped will make the few seconds/minutes of survival much easier.
    • Optional: A non-damaged ship can be summoned, but this will consume Starship Launch Fuel.
    • The Analysis Visor may be repaired to find the ship you rode in on. It will not be far; around 500u away. Its Launch Thruster will automatically be full of fuel if the Launch System Recharger is equipped. It will still be broken, but once repaired, it will be full. This will save you the cost of Starship Launch Fuel, at the expense of having to spend a minute or so running back to your Starship.
      • Once you do find your Starship (hint: It's directly ahead of you, so if you just walk straight with no turns, you'll run right into it), there will also be several Oxygen-rich plants nearby. Additionally, there will be several containers, a Buried Technology Module, a Damaged Machinery, and a Distress Beacon. There is a possible bug in that, if you DON'T interact with the Distress Beacon, leave the planet, and eventually transit to a new galaxy, the game may crash. This has not yet been tested thoroughly though; it's just a working hypothesis. Either way, having these things near your Starship when you find it makes it easy to collect Nanites, equipment upgrades, and a few other things.
    • The effects of "broken" Launch Thruster upgrades still seem to work, as do "broken" Hyperdrive upgrades.
    • The Mining Beam may also be repaired, as it's cheap to fix and could be required in a pinch to pick up some basic materials or fend off a hostile creature/plant/sentinel. Alternatively, you can switch to a different Multi-tool, as it will not be damaged.
    • Don't bother repairing ANYTHING else. If you're jumping through multiple galaxies, these will just be broken again on the next jump.
  • Launch into space (hopefully, you didn't have to repair anything). The Freighter can then be summoned, as you will be in a yellow star system. If you opted to summon an undamaged Starship to leave the surface of the planet/moon, you may now launch in your damaged, disposable Starship from the Freighter to repeat the process. Be sure to fuel up the Launch Thruster in your undamaged Starship, lest you find yourself unable to summon it later.
    • If you check your Galaxy Map, you'll see that you're only a few thousand light-years from the Galaxy Centre. This can easily be crossed in one or two Hyperdrive jumps to the Gateway system.
    • You do not need to transit a Black Hole again, as long as you stay logged into the game. You can simply travel to the Gateway system, and then follow the weird instructions above to transit to the next galaxy through the Galaxy Centre.
    • It is not known for sure whether or not you can "Quit to Mode Select" and not need to transit a Black Hole. However, considering the consequence of potentially having to transit the entire galaxy again before reaching the Galaxy Centre, it may be worth the extra few minutes to transit a Black Hole anyway after Quitting to Mode Select.
    • If you Quit to Desktop and leave the game, you will absolutely need to transit a nearby Black Hole again before resuming jumps through the Galaxy Centre.
