Updated Waypoint

Base Computer is a base building product.

Summary

Base Computer is a base building product which is described as a portable land registration service. A base computer is required to set up a Habitable Base, as Base Building is only enabled once a Base computer is deployed and successfully activated.

When deployed, the Base Computer can be interacted with to establish a new base. The base first must be activated, which checks to ensure no other base computer in the area has claimed part of the nearby territory. If activation is successful, it will create a buildable area around itself. This will enable the construction of all base components found in the Build Menu.

Once a base is established, the Base Computer can also be interacted with to rename the base, change the base's thumbnail screenshot or delete the base altogether, which removes both the Base Computer and everything constructed around it.

Game Description

NmsBase BaseComputer

A base computer prior to base construction

Portable land registration service.

When placed, contacts Universal Cartographic Archive to establish ownership of land. Successful registration allows the construction of base modules across any site of the user's choosing.

Crafting

Base Computer can be built using a blueprint and the following ingredients:

Buildable Area

NMS Building Theory to Practice Exercise
  • It creates a circular building area, about 147 u in radius. (300u, tested 8/23/2020) However, it seems this radius will increase the further up the player builds their base in height. (Uncertain with expanded new radius)
  • The area can be expanded up to a 1000u radius circle by building in the horizontal plane (N/S & E/W). As new items are placed, the allowable area expands. (eg electric wire runs, supply lines to mines, etc)
  • The area expands about 50-60u from the newly placed item.
  • The expanded area grows around the new items placed (see reference image for an example).

Additional Information

  • Picking up a base computer before it has been used to claim a location will return the base computer to the player's inventory as a constructed portable device item.
  • Deleting a claimed base will destroy the computer and it is not returned to the player's inventory.
  • Claiming a base area only claims it in one incarnation of the universe, for example in the Normal universe, the creative universe, etc in whatever game mode you are claiming in the game save. The same location on other modes will not be claimed prior to the Expeditions era. As of the Waypoint era and later, all bases constructed in any game mode will be visible across game modes except Permadeath and Expeditions game mode bases.
  • The name associated with the base computer can be changed and if it is done before using a teleporter associated with it, that name will be on the selection list of other teleporters.
  • Once the player has reached a certain point in the Alone Amidst the Stars mission, the base computer will begin to uncover useful blueprints from its archives every 90 minutes as part of the Base Computer Archives mission.
  • It is possible to find procedurally generated unclaimed base computers out in the wild, meaning the player is able to go through a portal, claim the base, go back through the portal, go to the Space Anomaly's teleporter and teleport to the claimed base.[1]
  • If you delete a base, it will not be possible to reclaim the area immediately, as it will still be claimed. This effect wears off after approximately three days; as the claim on the area is then removed from the servers; following the deletion of the base. After that, anyone, including you, can claim the site again.
  • The base computer can now be picked up and moved within the bounds of the base (added feature, as of Update 3.73). The centre of the base does not change. Moving the base computer is only moving the item; not moving the potential area of the base.
  • If you place a second base computer in the area of another base computer, you will be able to place it down, but unable to claim a the area. The stated error is that the Universal Cartography Records indicate a claim has already been made to this area.

Bugs and Issues

  • Bases built in very early eras, notably Pathfinder, Atlas Rises, and NEXT eras may no longer render in the game despite a base being registered on the planet. This is due to changes in the terrain procedural generation which may have may base rendering no longer possible at their location. These are considering issues of backwards compatibility and no longer considered as bugs.
  • Bug (3.60): If you experience the condition where the game persistently thinks your base computer is someplace other than your current base, teleport to the local space station to cause the mission to update and then fly back to your base. Please report this bug here.

Release History

  • NEXT - Added as a base building product.
  • Synthesis - Cost reduced for building, was 40 Chromatic Metal
  • Frontiers - Base Computer can be picked up and moved.
