C. Potasuippeus is a creature.
Summary[]
C. Potasuippeus is a creature in the No Man's Sky universe.
It is a member of the Rhopalocera genus.
This particular species of butterfly is a member of the rare subgenus category Seraph Butterfly, exhibiting the characteristic ethereal six wings.
This creature is social and predominantly diurnal, eager to interact with visitors by day. It is called the "Gadfly", just as Socrates was in ancient Athens, as he provoked others with persistent biting questions, encouraging them to examine themselves and their preconceived beliefs.
Appearance[]
The Gadfly exhibits "eyespots", bright eye-shaped patterns, on each of its striking six wings. There is some disagreement about their purpose. The eyespots may be "deimatic", used as a bluff to frighten or startle predators. The spots allow the butterfly to appear as something else, perhaps inedible or dangerous. Predators may therefore seek to avoid the Gadfly due to both dietary "neophobia", the fear of the unfamiliar, and dietary "conservatism", the fact that predators "avoid eating prey that has an unusual appearance". Studies have suggested that creatures with eyespots achieve these advantageous results not in fact because the patterns look like eyes, but just because they are conspicuous and striking.
In addition to the possible deimatic function of the eyespots, they may also serve to deflect an attack away from the Gadfly's vital parts. The patterns draw the attention of the attacker away from the head or other vital parts of the body, and towards the edges of the wings, where the Gadfly has a higher chance of surviving an attack.
In light of these adaptive advantages, the Gadfly has been able to flourish on Enwortha. And yet, it is a member of the extremely rare category Seraph Butterfly, highly prized by explorers.

Discovery Menu[]
A forest creature, at home flitting in and above the rich canopies of planet Enwortha. Carried by the wind as much as their wings, these small insects live a scattered and chaotic existence. A specially-adapted tongue indicates their diet is predominantly nectar, harvested from local flora.

Location[]
It can be found on the moon Enwortha in the HUB6-1A1 Lycon star system.
