Summary[ | ]

Community Research (week 5) is the fifth mission introduced as Community Research and its purpose is to help Specialist Polo locate an old acquaintance of theirs.

This is a time-limited mission and it was available for 7 days, starting from NEXT 1.64 until 19 October 2018. The first part of the mission takes place on a planet called Elorence E28 in the Inkixig-Garac system.

WARNING: It makes use of portal travel. Please do not forget to go back through the portal when you finished, or you will encounter Portal Interference messages.

Walkthrough[ | ]

Make contact with the Space Anomaly[ | ]

With this mission set as the active mission, fly into space and Polo will contact the player through the communicator.

Specialist Polo

-{{ Friend! Hello! I have spent sleepless sols puzzling over the coordinates we retrieved, cross-comparing with the Anomaly's databanks, returning empty over and over. The possible realities fan out infinitely, with only that single transmission to navigate by... }}-
-{{ But another signal has flickered across the boundaries. A Traveller-friend we thought had been lost! Their communicator suddenly from the darkness, signalled Nada and Polo! Such unspeakable happiness! }}-
-{{ The transmission frequency was so close, almost aligned, to those messages from beyond the breach. I have triangulated an equivalent location in this reality - would you travel there, return our Traveller-friend home? }}-

  • Accept

-{{ I am transmitting you coordinates for the portal, friend. But you must use all your caution! }}-
-{{ We are still learning, friend, still not understanding where it all leads. Once on the planet, stay low to the ground, out of the skies. I have made an adjustment to your exocraft navigation. It will provide all the guidance you need. }}-

Visit the marked planet[ | ]

A portal will be marked in the system where the player currently located. Due to it is a mission-related travel, the Portal Terminal will not require any recharge.

The portal yawns before me.
A few paces forward, and this ancient gateway will rip me from this world to some distant destination. Not for the first time, I find myself wondering what happens to my body in that in-between place, between the solidity of this planet and the next. Where has Polo directed me this time?
  • Input Polo's Glyphs
  • Leave

Search for Polo' contact[ | ]

After arriving to the other side of the portal, the mission objective will be updated and using an exocraft's scanner is required to reveal the MISSION.COMMUNITY icon for a Crashed Ship location.

The player needs to access the beacon's logs located at the crash site.

Distress Beacon

I have arrived at the source of the signal, but there are no signs of life here. Only the crumpled remains of a starship, and the sickly electronic buzz of its distress beacon.

  • Access the beacon's log
Finally - kzzkktt - must have been an hour of pursuit. My deflector shield - kzzkktt - more launch fuel before I can move on, but - kzzkktt - detection. I should log my findings, for myself as well as for Polo.
- kzzkktt - through the portal - it was real. I arrived - kzzkktt - all mixed up in my head. But those drifting bubbles - kzzkktt - familiar.
I captured the sight this time. Took photos. I'm not sure if that's what drew their attention, but the Sentinels - kzzkktt - see their eyes every time I close my own.
Orbs of - kzzkktt - monitoring them all - kzzkktt - mad theories. I can believe there are more anomalous worlds like this, but - kzzkktt - there forever?
  • Leave

Make contact with the Space Anomaly[ | ]

The player will be contacted again through the communicator, after using the starship's scanner.

Specialist Polo

-{{ Have you brought news, and friendship? Did friends unite? }}-

  • Tell about the crash site
Polo slumps into themselves, looking defeated. They seem to look inwards for several moments before speaking.

-{{ This is very sad news. }}-
-{{ There must be a way... I am sure... to reach back... but I am ahead of myself. There is more work I must do, and it will take real, linear time. }}-
-{{ Friend - are there are more untold stories out in this reality? More star vessels left broken and flightless in the dirt? Please tell me... anything you find. }}-

  • End transmission

Visit Polo's robotic companion[ | ]

The Space Anomaly will warp into the player's current system, allowing it to be boarded it.

The door behind the Control Panel is accessible, where Quicksilver Synthesis Companion resides.

After speaking with the merchant NPC the mission objective will be updated.

(Optional) Investigate more crashed starships[ | ]

The broadcast is amplified and the signal zone extended throughout the galaxy, allowing to investigate crashed ships on any planets. The player could visit other planets, but it can be done on the initial planet.

The mission log suggests using the "Scan Distress Frequencies" option with a Navigation Data on the Signal Booster can reveal crashed ship locations.

However using the "Locate Nearby Structures" can also reveal locations with a Distress Beacon, which also qualifies for the mission progress.

Distress Beacon[ | ]

The distress beacon pulses, its blinking light inviting me to play back a logged recording. The machinery is smoking, however, and appears fragile. I have a sense I may only be able to listen to one of these logs before the device gives out altogether.

If you turn in partial research data, the following conversation takes place.

Specialist Polo

-{{ This data brings grief with it, friend, but the stories are precious. Have you discovered more? }}-

  • Transmit data
Polo nods seriously. They say nothing, but I sense they still want to know more.
  • End transmission.

-{{ Hail us with your scanner, friend, if you find more logs. }}-

After accessing 5 logs, the research data limit is reached and the mission objective will be updated.

Return to space and contact Polo again by using the starship's scanner.

Specialist Polo

-{{ So many stories, friend, thank you, but there is a bitter taste to them. I cannot bear any more unhappy endings. Let us make this our final transmission for now. }}-

  • Transmit data

-{{ Polo nods in thanks, their expression inscrutable. They tell me they have transferred a gift to my accounts, and that I might spend it on something of comfort. }}-
