Companion Pets is a game mechanics page.
Summary[ | ]
From v3.20, you can tame creatures and make them companions. It will accompany you everywhere on your lonely exploration of space. Practicality aside, it is an element that can be enjoyed by enjoying adorable gestures and showing off an unusual appearance.
Taming[ | ]
Regular creatures can be tamed by feeding them Creature Pellets. They are learned automatically after the end of Awakenings. Mechanical creatures can be tamed with an Ion Battery. Once tamed, not only can you ride and harvest, but if you have a companion slot, you can also make them your companion. Advanced feeding, implemented in v2.0, was used to induce behaviors such as riding in creatures, but was abolished in v3.2.
Tameable Creatures[ | ]
Target is any living thing that can be fed.
Normal living things that walk around the ground can be fed in general. Mechanical creatures can also be fed. Special creatures and creatures that fly at low altitudes such as insects could not be fed before, but from v3.5 Prisms it is possible to feed them as exotic companions.
However, special creatures that roll cannot be ridden. Pet equipment cannot be equipped. Currently, underwater fish that cannot be fed, birds that fly high in the sky, and worms are not included. (However it is possible to add worms as companion but it requires completing Expedition 4: Emergence)
Biological Horror cannot be tamed, but eggs can be obtained as a reward for completing Expedition 3: Cartographers. Creatures that hatch from eggs are tamed from the beginning. If you are interested, don't miss it.
Companion Slots[ | ]
A companion slot is required to register a creature as a companion. You have two slots from the beginning. After that, you can add them with Nanite Clusters
The limit was 1 page and a maximum of 6 slots in v3.2 Companions, but was expanded to 3 pages and a maximum of 18 slots in v3.8 Sentinel.
Cost of adding companion slots
- 1: None (already owned)
- 2nd slot: 500 Nanites
- 3rd slot: 1,000 Nanites
- 5th slot: 5,000 Nanites
- 6th slot: 10,000 Nanites
- 7th to 18th slots: 20,000 Nanites
Summoning[ | ]
You can call up a companion from the paw icon in the Quick Menu and take them with you. It can be summoned not only outdoors on planets, but also on Space Anomaly and Space Stations.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to summon it on player bases at the moment, and even if you call it outside, you cannot enter the base building. The restrictions on movement seem to be no different from those of wild creatures. It might be a good idea to create a kind of playground or garden with bare ground on the base.
The inside of a Freighter is also generally unrecognizable. The same goes for Derelict Freighter.
Riding a Companion[ | ]
If it is a "size that can be ridden" and "a type that can be ridden" (a general creature that is not a creature that rolls on the ground or a mutant creature from an exotic environment), it can be ridden.
When mounted, it can pass through various obstacles and ignores uneven ground. It is not attacked by Sentinels, and the Quick Menu, Analysis Visor, and Survey Device can be used. It can be used to investigate resources and Hotspots and travel long distances in exploration and Nexus missions on planets where Sentinels are dangerous or have rough ground.
It can control the direction left and right and sprint. Mechanical creatures are fast and recommended for riding. Next, giant crabs, mantises, scarabs, and other multi-legged creatures are also quite fast. Cat-like creatures are also suitable for riding.
Since v3.5, it has become possible to ride low-flying creatures. It is not possible to control ascent and descent, and horizontal speed is not very good, but it is possible to glide from a unique perspective.
Controls while riding (when using a gamepad):
- Start moving - W
- Steering - A/D
- Stop - S
- Sprinting - L Shift
- Get off the companion - SPACE
Advantages[ | ]
You can use the Quick Menu, Analysis Visor, and Survey Device while riding a companion, and there are various advantages to movement. You will not take damage from hostile creatures or most dangerous plants except for Carnivorous Trap Plant. You will not be attacked by Sentinels either (they will be wary of you).
You can slip through minerals and flora . Unlike Exocrafts, you will not destroy anything along the way. You can run up almost vertical undulations. You can also sprint. Creatures that can fly low and descend slowly can be used like a paraglider by riding them from a high place.
Disadvantages[ | ]
There are some points to keep in mind as riding a companion has not been used much up until now.
Planet base parts and structures cannot be stepped on or entered. You cannot enter water while riding. The mount will be removed as soon as you enter the water. Although you cannot ride the companion, they will follow you into the water.
The Traveller will not take damage from dangerous plants while riding. However, if you directly collide with (step on) a Carnivorous Trap Plant object, the creature you were riding will disappear and you will be forced to remove the mount (if the creature you were riding was a companion, it will simply retreat to an unsummoned state. If it was a non-companion, it will die). Carnivorous Trap Plant seem to be a natural enemy of the ride.
If you dash into a cave, you will get stuck in the wall. If you dismount from the companion, you can get to normal ground, but you will take a small amount of fall damage. You can still go straight in this state, so if there is a destination, it may be faster to just run straight ahead. Individuals that have had their height and weight increased using the Egg Sequencer will move slower than before. This movement speed penalty is likely to have two stages.
When riding, if dust rises from under your feet, they will no longer jog or walk quickly. Furthermore, if you increase your height and weight, vibrations will occur every time you walk, making your footsteps sound heavier, and your walking speed and sprint time will decrease.
Large dinosaurs of the Diplo genus have severe movement penalties, while legless hopping creatures of the Blob genus seem not to be affected much. There may be differences in movement speed and stamina consumption between "simply feeding and riding" a creature on a planet and "taking it into your companionship, putting it away, and then riding it again." In other words, you can't always take the movement speed you see at first glance at face value. It may also depend on the genus of the creature.
Stamina will decrease if your hunger and affection levels are low. The more playful and loyal your personality is, the more stamina you will have. You will be able to run for up to about 40 seconds. When riding a companion that is too large, the companion will get in the way when wearing the Analysis Visor, making it impossible to use.
Spontaneous combustion is nullified for companions, but riding them does not nullify damage to the player. When riding a tall companion, the player will not be affected by the spontaneous combustion hit detection, but when riding a short companion, the player will come into contact with the spontaneous combustion, so be careful.
Companion Ability[ | ]
It seems to be designed to help you explore with various actions if you trust it sufficiently, but so far it seems to be quite capricious, even if the trust is high.
A companion may perform the following actions:
- Scanning Resources
- Hazard Marking
- Illuminate with lights
- Attacks on predators, harmful plants, and sentinels
- An attack on a predator is performed when the player is attacked by a predator. Even against a predator with a lot of health, if the attack hits, it will kill them with a single blow.
- Companion attacks also include an attack judgment on the player, and if you are standing in front of a companion, you may be caught in an attack. Unlike attacks against predators, they do not kill instantly, but be aware that if you are attacked, you will take a decent amount of damage.
- Depending on the size and species of your companion, their attack detection may be larger than they look, so it's best to keep them away from each other during combat.
- Find a structure
- Unearth treasures
- Extraction of resources
- Production of Pharma
- When the companion UI's satiety gauge is around green (i.e., it has enough food), it regularly produces (i.e., excretes) Faecium.
- Predatory behavior
- Companions with high aggression may engage in predatory behavior. Successful hunts and meals increase the satiety of the companion UI.
- Conversation
- Make a statement that is tailored to the situation. The content of what is said is displayed in the lower left corner of the screen for a while.
- The content of what is said changes depending on the personality. The content of the speech differs depending on the character color of the personality. There are 4 types of regular companions (not machines). The one with the highest percentage of the three personalities in each individual is reflected, and if the percentages are the same, the one at the top of the list is reflected.
- The color of each personality is yellow: "diligence and playfulness", green is "calmness and loyalty", red is "aggressive", and blue is "independence".
Companion Information[ | ]
Companion information is displayed in the "Companion List UI" that can be viewed from the quick menu, and in the "Companion UI" that appears when interacting with a companion.
You can view the companion list by selecting "Companion Registry" from the Quick Menu, and see basic information about each companion.
- Name
- The companion is automatically named when registered. You can also rename it by using the pencil icon. Only alphanumeric characters and some symbols can be used.
- Appearance
- It is automatically reduced/enlarged to fit the screen. Therefore, the impression may differ from the size when actually summoned on the ground.
- Current Mood
- Psychological state, level of consciousness, etc. It is the same as the "It seems to be feeling XX" that is displayed on the HUD when you aim at a companion on the ground.
- Previously, the same value was displayed no matter which companion's column you looked at. As of v4.45, there are still bugs, and sometimes the current mood of each companion is reflected, and sometimes it is not, so it is better to think of it as a guideline.
- Trust
- Reliability, trustworthiness. The unit is %, and the specific meaning is unknown. It seems to be one of the conditions for whether or not you can induce spawning. It is also probably related to the frequency of spontaneous actions and comments.
- According to the patch notes, "You can earn trust over time by playing with them, feeding them, and paying attention to them."
- Right after registering a companion, it is around 50-65%. After that, it seems to increase by 5% if you pet or feed them after about a day has passed in real time.
- Native Climate
- The original planetary environment in which the species lives. The name is a little confusing because it varies. You can induce spawning in your companions on the ground in a suitable environment. However, you can summon them and take them with you even if the environment is not suitable.
- Weight
- Unit is kg.
- Height
- Unit is m. As of v3.21, some creatures may display a value that is much smaller than their actual standing height, perhaps because the length of their legs is excluded.
- The actual display of the companion you summon differs between "when materialized on a planet" and "when hologrammed in a space anomaly or space station." For example, even if there is a clear difference in size between two creatures on a planet, they will appear to be roughly the same size inside the station.
- Age
- Gender
- Species
- Same as displayed in the Analysis Visor.
- Playfulness/Helpfulness
- Gentleness/Aggression
This is related to the frequency of attacks on dangerous plants. Immediately after registering a creature as a companion, if it is a predator, it will tend to be "aggressive," and most other creatures will tend to be "gentle."
- Independence/Devotion
Release History[ | ]
- Companions - Introduced to the game.
