Expedition 2: Beachhead describes the second expedition in No Man's Sky.
Summary[ | ]
This page documents the second expedition of No Man's Sky, called Beachhead. It began on 17 May 2021 immediately after the end of the first expedition, and ended on 31 May 2021.
A redux of Expedition 2: Beachhead began on 7 November 2024 and ran until 21 November 2024, with major changes to objectives but with the main rewards unchanged.
Gameplay[ | ]
All players start on the planet Tibertant Alpha, approximately 800–2000 units away from their crashed starship. Players may reach their starship on foot, or by traveling by Roamer; constructing a Roamer Geobay is the first expedition milestone. The starting starship is a random C-Class hauler with 15+4 slots, equipped with either an Instability Drive, or Sub-Light Amplifier, and a random coloured trail. The players also start with a random 16+8 C-class Freighter, with Freighter Hyperdrive and Temporal Warp Computer already installed. Because of that, there will be no free Freighters in this expedition.
In addition to the blueprints known at the beginning of normal mode, the player also knows the following blueprints:
- Crafted Products
- Equipment
- Constructed Technology
- Exocraft Upgrades
- Freighter Upgrades
- Temporal Warp Computer
- Construction Parts
- Several concrete construction components
The starting Multi-tool in Expedition mode is a random C-class pistol or small rifle. Relative to the starter multi-tool in Normal mode, it has a larger number of slots (12) and some additional features:
- a random weapon
- Terrain Manipulator
- Analysis Visor
- Advanced Mining Laser
- X-Class Mining Beam Upgrade Module.
The Exosuit is initially equipped with two random upgrades to either Jetpack, Life Support, or Hazard Protection systems, and has 26 slots. The initial avatar appearance is randomly-generated.
Milestones & Rewards[ | ]
Achieving each milestone results in substantial rewards in the form of Expedition Patches, Items, Blueprints, Exosuit and Starship slots.
Note that the redux version of this expedition has different rewards than the original expedition did. Those different rewards are not reflected in the table below.

Anomalous Research community mission[ | ]
Reaching the fifth rendezvous and acquiring the Historiographical Dosimeter unlocked the Anomalous Research community mission. This mission required the player community to collect historiographical flux data from alien plaques and monoliths, and upload the flux readings to Nada. The in-game description was
- Research alien history and language
- Nada has detected a new pattern emerging in the stories of the Gek, Korvax, and Vy'keen. They believe this historical echo is a communication artifact from an anomalous source. Submit historical data from alien artifact sites to assist Nada and Polo in their research. Purchase planetary charts from a space station Cartographer.
Each historiographical flux reading awarded 15.
The mission was completed around 10:00 UTC on 2021-05-21, enabling all players to purchase the Myth Beacon and complete the expedition.
Historiographical Flux Readouts[ | ]
