Walkthrough[edit | edit source]

First Contact[edit | edit source]

Something terrible has happened to Artemis, their signal cut off as they were surrounded by strange figures they described as having 'seeds of glass' within their skin. Before they went, they managed to transmit the frequency for someone named 'Apollo'. I do not know if this stranger will prove friend or foe.

First, the player must use their Starship's scanner to locate a Holo-Terminus, then use it to reach out to the lifeform called Apollo. During the conversation, the player will need to give Apollo their data logs, then agree to work with them to uncover the connections between the Portal system and Sentinel appearances.

Advanced Base Building[edit | edit source]

Apollo has suggested that the Sentinels may be linked to Artemis' disappearance. They suggest we cooperate. If the Sentinels use the portal network, then if we managed to follow them inside, who knows what secrets we might unlock on our way to rescuing Artemis...

The conversation will end with Apollo referring the player to a lifeform in another star system's Space Station. The player must visit this lifeform and claim an environmental protection Upgrade Module, then travel to one of their existing bases (or create a new base using another Base Computer).

The player should be aware that Space Fleets will begin to spawn in all inhabited Star systems upon initial arrival in the system containing the lifeform; as well, a Space battle will trigger in that system, allowing the player to obtain their first freighter for free and begin the mission Freighter Command.

Once at a base, the player will be tasked with preparing for the dangers ahead by expanding their base and hiring staff. The lifeform that granted the player an Upgrade Module also gave them 15 Salvaged Data as well as the blueprints for the Cylindrical Room, Door and Deepwater Chamber structures at that time; in addition, the player will have learned the blueprint for the Construction Terminal upon arriving at their base, starting the mission Expanding the Base. To advance Ghosts in the Machine, the player will need to progress Expanding the Base far enough to obtain the blueprint for the Science Terminal, then work through Scientific Research until they receive blueprints for Lubricant and Acid from the now-hired Scientist.

Once the player has built the two terminals and hired an Overseer and Scientist to staff them, they must return to space and make contact with Apollo to receive a blueprint for a Personal Forcefield.

Preparations[edit | edit source]

Apollo has asked me to upgrade my equipment by obtaining blueprints from a multitool technology trader. It is dangerous work, hunting Sentinels. I need to be prepared for anything...

The player must install a Personal Forcefield in their Multi-tool if it is not already present (a trade-in for a superior multi-tool may be required if there is not enough room for the technology in their current multi-tool). Apollo will then task the player with obtaining Nanite Clusters from an Abandoned Building's terminal, then exchanging 60 nanites for a multi-tool upgrade module from the marked merchant in the local Space station (though the mission objective mentions a Vy'keen system, this part can actually be accomplished in a Korvax or Gek system as well). Once the module has been acquired, the player must return to space once more to converse with Apollo.

However, before Apollo has a chance to contact the player, the player will receive a transmission from a mysterious entity which claims to know all about the player's activity --- as it ends, the player will discover that the entity's name is -null- (that is, their name is missing).

On the Offense[edit | edit source]

Apollo wants to study the Sentinels. They hope to draw the drone's attention by attacking a Korvax facility. I appear to be the bait in this 'trap'...

Immediately after the mysterious transmission, the player must answer Apollo's transmission and indicate their readiness for whatever Apollo has planned next. They will direct the player to break into a Korvax Manufacturing Facility, not only to obtain any potential data from its terminal, but also to force Sentinel appearances so Apollo can figure out how they move around.

As with normal Manufacturing Facilities, the player will need to destroy the reinforcement on the door with a dedicated multi-tool weapon in order to gain access. The facility's terminal will need to be repaired with 20 Sodium (Security Alarm), 8 Chromatic Metal (Output screen), and 50 Pure Ferrite (Boiler Unit) before it can be operated by the player. Once it is operational, the player will be given blueprints for the Haz-Mat Gauntlet. Players that already have the blueprints will instead get Nanite Cluster. Afterward, they will encounter a hairy creature which is doomed to die regardless of what happens. The player can choose to feed the creature (requires 15 Carbon), euthanise the creature or do nothing; the mission will conclude after this decision point, triggering a 3-star Wanted level and beginning A Leap in the Dark.

Release history[edit | edit source]

  • Atlas Rises - Added to the game as a primary mission.
  • Beyond - Multiple changes to mission sections leading up to the facility raid
    • Warping to the system containing Apollo's contact now triggers space fleet spawns
      • Formerly, these spawns were triggered much earlier, near the end of the mission Awakenings
    • Apollo's contact now grants 15 Salvaged Data instead of the Paving blueprint
    • Construction Terminal blueprint is now learned only through this mission
      • Formerly, it was taught by building a Cylindrical Room for the first time
    • Added Personal Forcefield blueprint reward and installation objective
    • Players are now required to visit an Abandoned Building exactly once
      • Formerly, possessing 60+ nanites was the only requirement to complete the nanite collection objective
  • Beyond 2.09 - Fixed an issue where players were asked to collect nanites from an unusable terminal during the Ghost in the Machine [sic] mission.
