HUD evolution
Heads-Up Display is information display.
Summary[]

Both ships and a player's exo-suit include technology that displays pertinent information in the viewscreen without the need to look down at a hard-wired console. This is referred to as a heads-up display, and has changed over the months as the game and ships have been modified for game play. Note that some of the graphics in this article are from earlier HUD versions.

Historical - Wanted Levels at Level 3
A ship's console contains both a physical instrument panel and a visual heads-up display (or HUD) for in-flight viewing. The main advantage of a HUD is that it allows the player to see the information without having to look down at the hard console. (Note that the aNa-aa console does provide two small physical HUDs at the top of the window that can be read without looking down.) This can be especially handy when a player's Wanted Level is on the rise.
The HUD normally consists of seven possible sections at the edges of the viewscreen, leaving the centre area open for unrestricted viewing. Note that sections will only display when needed or relevant to the situation. These sections can be described as follows, going clockwise from lower left:
- Temperature/Time
- Health/Environment Protection Status
- Shields/Damage
- Compass
- Weapons/Hand Tools
- Wanted Level
- Jetpack/Sprint/Storage Status, & Mission Messages
Composition[]
A typical ship-based HUD system consists of a computer for generating the information, a projector to generate the light beam, and a combiner to take the narrow beam and project it in front of the user (normally near the windscreen of the vehicle). The HUD for a player's suit is a miniaturized version contained in the suit's helmet.
Sections[]
When operating with an Exosuit, the display shows shield, integrity, stamina, and jet tank remaining levels, and also notifies of extreme weather, predatory creatures, and the approach of Sentinels.
When aboard the Starship, the remaining levels of shields and durability are displayed, and the approach of Sentinel Interceptors and enemy ships is also notified.
Center of the screen - Aiming[]
There is a aiming point in the center of the screen, and attacks from Multi-Tool and Starship will generally fly towards it. The shape of the aiming point represents the type of main weapon of the Multi-Tool or Starship weapon. When aiming at a Mineral or Flora, the name of the target, a circle gauge showing its durability, and the resources that will be harvested if it is destroyed are displayed.
Top left - Shield and Health[]
It has a two-tiered structure, with the upper gauge showing the shield and the lower icon showing the current health the player is currently have. When you receive any damage, the shield gauge will first decrease, and if it is completely lost, your shield will be down.
If you receive further damage while your shield is down, your health will decrease. If your initiative runs out, you will die. The following are the differences between the exosuit and the Starship.
Exosuit[]
- The shield will recover after a certain amount of time. It cannot be recharged manually.
- While your shield is down, you can only hide by digging into the ground or endure with a Personal Forcefield.
- In Sentinel battles, shields are restored by opening or destroying the "Combat Supplies" obtained when a Sentinel is destroyed. Keeping some of them while fighting increases your ability to continue fighting.
- Health is restored by eating, etc. The number of icons is initially 3, but can be increased to 9 with shield modules, etc.
Starship[]
- Shields recover over time if you do not receive damage, but it takes a long time before they start recovering, so it is not practical.
- Basically, you recharge them manually from the Quick Menu using Sodium, Sodium Nitrate or Starshield Battery.
- You can also use the Phase Beam to steal the shield energy of enemy aircraft and make it your own. Absorbing it at the right time while fighting will save supplies.
- Shields are not restored with supplies obtained when destroying enemy ships. Previously it was restored, but this was changed in v3.85 Outlaws
- Health is restored when landing somewhere. The number of icons is fixed at 7.
- Shields do not recover immediately when you land on a planet. If you land on a Space Station or Space Anomaly, they will be fully restored.
Top center - Compass[]
The compass is displayed at the top of the screen. Icons that appear when using the Analysis Visor such as various structures and objects in the surrounding area, are also displayed. You can reach your destination by moving with these icons at the center. It is possible to know the direction on the planet. Previously, only north and south were displayed, but from v5.5 Worlds Part II, east and west are also displayed.
It has a peculiar behavior in space, but it can be used to investigate objects in the surrounding area. The Analysis Visor must be installed when operating in an exosuit or Exocraft. It is always displayed when boarding a spaceship. The number of gauges is fixed.
Top right - Weapon and Sentinel alert level[]
It has three sections, the top is a heat gauge. The middle section shows the multi-tool usage status, and the five squares at the bottom show the sentinel alert level. The small white dots indicates the currently selected weapon, and the grayed-out dots indicates the number of weapons and other types mounted on the currently used multi-tool. The content is roughly the same when aboard a spaceship.
Bottom left - Energy gauge and surrounding environment[]
It has three sections, the top is a gauge for underwater breathing and Hazard Protection system remaining. The middle section is a gauge for Life Support system remaining. The bottom section shows the planet name and environment: temperature in °C/°F/K, radiation level in Rad, and toxicity level in Tox. In) When in the water, the depth of the player's position relative to the sea floor is displayed.
When on board a ship, if you are in space, the name of the star system and information about the ruling life form of that star system will be displayed. If you are on a planet, the name of the planet will be displayed.
Icon description | Meaning |
---|---|

|
If the player is in harsh conditions, a text will show just above the gauge:
- STORM and EXTREME STORM: Shows when the player is affected by an ongoing Storm.
- DAMAGED: Shows when the Hazard Protection and/or the Life Support is critically damaged.
- DEEP WATER: Shows above the Life Support gauge when the player is 200u deep. This drains the Life Support faster.
- HYPERPRESSURE: Shows above the Hazard Protection gauge when the player is 200u deep. If the hazard stays underwater, this drains the Hazard Protection faster. Both the effect can be negated using the Pressure Membrane.
Bottom right - Mission hints and guide information[]
Mission progress and notifications for each situation are displayed. The icon on the top right of the text symbolizes the content of the text. If you don't understand the meaning of the text, try looking for the same image in the current environment, the item case screen, or the discovery/options screen.
The hints can be redisplayed or switched by pressing the HUD display button (H). The hints that progress the mission are important. Be careful not to ignore them as you will not be able to proceed. Unimportant general guides are also displayed, but they can generally be read in the "Catalogue and Guide".
Bottom right - Usage amount and special notification[]
An icon gauge appears depending on the state of the player character. They are displayed only when necessary, and multiple can be displayed at the same time.
