Miskatonic City is a player base.
Summary[ | ]
Miskatonic City is a player base, located on the planet Traveller's Creek in the Hub10-16A Uenoha system.
This system hosts the NMS-RPG narrative experience of the same name. This first-of-its-kind experience utilizes special in-game features to 'connect' No Man's Sky with WrittenRealms, a third-party tool enabling text-based RPG features. Some of those special in-game features include hidden switches with their locations only revealed by dialogue from NPCs, locked teleporters which are enabled by those hidden switches, and a dialogue prompt system enabling visitors to "speak" with the original NPCs of Miskatonic.
The Miskatonic City narrative cannot be completed without using WrittenRealms, but the base may be accessed regardless.
Layout[ | ]
Miskatonic City consists primarily of a single 'main street', a long stretch on which the majority of NPCs and interior areas can be found. On the extreme eastern end, the Pumpkin Archive boasts massive Orange Pustules, a pumpkin patch, and starship pilots landing at the archive. Heading west, visitors will enter Miskatonic City - divided into eastern, central, and western zones - featuring the majority of indoor spaces and NPCs. Finally, visitors will reach the Skull Archive, locked down for the illicit business of the Jelly Rollers crew.
Features[ | ]
This base includes relatively few features associated with vanilla gameplay, as the focus of this base is the NMS-RPG narrative experience mentioned above.
As for the features associated with the narrative experience:
WrittenRealms[ | ]
WrittenRealms is the third-party website which drives the dialogue, inventory, and other RPG/narrative features.
- Movement: On PC, use the arrow keys to move. On mobile, click north/east/south/west.
- Items: Most items will function just by being in your inventory. Some items will prompt commands to use.
- Locked Doors: Unlock doors by typing “Open Door (Direction)” after obtaining the key.
- Typing: On PC, the text bar is open by default. On mobile, click “Type” to start. This is your main way to interact with NPCs.
Starting Point[ | ]
WrittenRealms assumes you will start from the landing pad next to the base computer. you can also choose to start elsewhere, but you’ll need to move around in WrittenRealms until it matches your location in NMS.
Zone Gates[ | ]
These orange Zone Gates indicate when you should move to a new area in WrittenRealms. You’ll only find these in the main areas of miskatonic city: pumpkin archive, east / central / west miskatonic, and skull archive. Most locked areas will be accessed by teleporter.
Dialogue Prompts[ | ]
These numbered panels represent opportunities for players to start conversations with NPCs. Orange panels with black text are conversation prompts. Black panels with orange text are action prompts. Both work the same: type “say 123” while in the correct area of WrittenRealms, replacing “123” with the numbers on the panel.
Teleporters[ | ]
Teleporters in the city are often locked. To find the locks, explore the city’s hidden crevices or speak with NPCs for guidance. A multitool with a Neutron Cannon is required to activate switches.
Rewards & Loot[ | ]
Miskatonic City conceals grand rewards. Vouchers for Companion Eggs, vouchers for HubCoin, and access to special Halloween colonies can be obtained by daring visitors.
Note that vouchers may only be claimed during a period of roughly 36 days. Miskatonic City is planned to open yearly on October 1st to usher in Halloween season in Hub space, and vouchers earned as prizes expire on November 5th.
How to Play the Narrative[ | ]
The text below mirrors the introduction message which players are presented with upon landing at the starting point.
Introduction[ | ]
Welcome to Miskatonic City, a Galactic Hub Project narrative colony!
Miskatonic City is designed as a single-player RPG-style narrative. By exploring the city, talking to its residents, completing tasks, and solving puzzles, interlopers can uncover the mystery at the heart of Miskatonic City.
As payment, we only ask for one thing: post screenshots of your experience on https://reddit.com/r/NMSGalacticHub/, https://lemmy.world/c/nomanssky, or in the #miskatonic-city-👻 channel of the Galactic Hub Discord server!
WARNING: A multitool with the Neutron Cannon is required to progress through Miskatonic City. Otherwise, you may get trapped in some areas. Such areas have no way to manually save, so you can always reload a Restore Point.
To start the Miskatonic City narrative, go to the following link: https://writtenrealms.com/worlds/231495/miskatonic-city-galactic-hub and navigate to the same location in the WrittenRealms (WR) world as you're located in in-game. Both in-game and WR locations are labeled by the same names. So if you're at the Pumpkin Archive in-game, head to the Pumpkin Archive room in WR as well.
Controls and Commands[ | ]
When you approach a NPC in Miskatonic City, you will find a message module at their feet which says "say (Phrase)", for example, "say Hello 7101334". You must type this into the WrittenRealms text box exactly as you see it written in-game. This will prompt the conversation to begin.
As the conversation progresses, the NPC will provide you with more options to continue with the flow of conversation. If the NPC provides no options, that means the conversation has reached its end. You can attempt to repeat past dialogue options to return to an earlier point in the conversation.
Other useful controls and commands include:
- Move on mobile by clicking directions like "East" and "West". Move on PC using the arrow keys.
- look <NPCNameAsOneWord>, ex. "look JellySandra": This will give you a description of the NPC, granting insight into their demeanor, appearance, and more. On mobile, you can also click a character's name to Look. On PC, you can click "x Characters in Room", then click or hover over their name to Look.
- give <item> <NPCNameAsOneWord>, ex. "give HubPumpkin JellySandra": This will transfer an item to a NPC, which is sometimes necessary to start certain interactions. Items meant to be transferred to specific NPCs will usually contain instructions in their description explaining exactly what to type.
Item Inventory & Reward Redemption[ | ]
Throughout your time in Miskatonic City, you will find and earn rewards which can be redeemed from Euclid Director 7101334. The most common rewards will be vouchers allowing you to claim Halloween-themed companion eggs. Rare rewards such as location information for Halloween colonies, HubCoin prizes, in-game supplies, and even occasional physical merch can also be obtained.
Redemption instructions can be found in the description of the reward item.
To view your available items, click "Items" on PC, or "Info" then "Items" on mobile.
Stay safe in the swampy streets of Miskatonic, interloper. And happy Halloween! 🎃
Additional Information[ | ]
Miskatonic City features 26 NPCs and over 700 lines of original dialogue (if including responses the player can give, otherwise closer to 400-500 lines). In addition to this, all items and NPCs feature a description of their appearances.
All aspects of the base and the WrittenRealms narrative were created solely by 7101334.
