Mission Board

The Mission Board provides secondary missions within No Man's Sky.

Summary[ | ]

The Mission Board is a stall located inside space stations allowing players to take on secondary missions for the different races, and guilds.

Upon completion, a player may be rewarded with units, Nanite Clusters, blueprints, and other items. If a mission would reward a duplicate blueprint, units will be awarded in the blueprint's place. Reputation is awarded for completion based on the race or guild giving the mission.

Mission Board Mechanics[ | ]

The Mission Board within a given space station offers 5 procedurally-generated missions at a time which must be completed and turned in (provided the player has enough Exosuit inventory space to accept the rewards) in order to generate new missions in the same mission slot, The list of missions being offered typically follows a specific pattern:

  • The 1st mission slot houses a low-rank mission for the system's race.
  • The 2nd-4th mission slots hold low-rank missions for each of the three guilds.
    • The guild associated with each slot is fixed for a given space station's Mission Board, but is allowed to vary between space stations.
  • The final mission slot is reserved for a high-rank mission for either the system's race or a random guild.

As the player gains standing ranks with the races and guilds, the Mission Board will begin to replace low-rank missions with mid-rank missions offering superior non-standing rewards.

Mission Board missions are instanced separately for each star system (and for each player), so it is possible (and, for some mission types, beneficial) to have active missions from several Mission Boards at once. Completed Mission Board missions may be turned in at any star system's Mission Board (provided the system is not uncharted or abandoned) using the "Hand in missions" dialogue option; alternately, if the player returns to the Mission Board from which a mission was originally accepted, the completed mission may instead be turned in directly within the list of missions.

Mission Types[ | ]

Collect Item[ | ]

The player is tasked with acquiring the required items (250 units of a localised earth element or 50 units of a harvested agricultural substance for low-rank variants, 1 tradeable or crafted product for high-rank variants), then delivering them to a Galactic Trade Terminal located at a Trading Post.

Delivery[ | ]

The player is tasked with taking a random marketed tradeable (item value is based on the mission's rank) to another star system and delivering it to a Galactic Trade Terminal located at a Trading Post in that system. Accepting a Delivery mission grants the player a Defence Chit in case of pirate attack.

Destroy Sentinels[ | ]

The player is tasked with destroying Sentinel units for the client. High-rank variants instead task the player with destroying Sentinel Quads.

[Stacks with all other missions of this type - e.g. kill 5 sentinels to complete all of the ones that want you to kill 5 or less sentinels]

Kill Creatures[ | ]

The player is tasked with killing fauna for the client. High-rank variants instead task the player with killing predators in particular.

[Stacks with all other missions of this type - e.g. kill 10 creatures to complete all of the ones that want you to kill 10 or less creatures. Missions that detail killing Monstrosities do not stack.]

Note: Killing biological horrors at abandoned buildings does count as creatures but not as carnivores, and is a good way to complete the mission quickly as there are lots of them and they come to you. Sitting in your exocraft makes it easy. This is also good if you are tender-hearted and don't like random killing.

Feed Creatures[ | ]

The player is tasked with feeding fauna for the client.

[Stacks with all other missions of this type - e.g. feed 10 creatures to complete all of the ones that want you to feed 10 or less creatures]

Find Missing Person[ | ]

The player is tasked with finding a person for the client.

  • Low-rank variants immediately send the player to a Crashed Ship (approximate waypoint). Talking to the marked lifeform allows the player to transmit their location to the client, completing the mission's objective.
  • High-rank variants send the player to a lifeform at a Trading Post. This lifeform may require a bribe to grant the player the location of the missing person. Alternatively, this lifeform may tell the player that the person they are looking for left in a hurry, starting a timer for the player to locate the lifeform. In both cases, visiting the lifeform (at a Crashed Ship) and transmitting their location completes the mission's objective.

Hunt Pirates[ | ]

The player is tasked with travelling to the marked pirate base via Pulse Jump, then defeating all pirate waves that spawn, for the client. The threat of the pirates that spawn depends on the mission's required rank:

  • Low-level Pirates: The pirates have default durability and lethality (identical to pirates with 100,000-unit bounties).
  • Pirates: The pirates have augmented durability and lethality (identical to pirates with 200,000-unit bounties).
  • Dangerous Pirates: The pirates have greatly augmented durability and lethality (identical to pirates with 300,000-unit bounties).

Take a Photo[ | ]

The player is tasked with using Photo Mode to take a photograph of a particular location. Photo Mode must be accessed while on foot --- taking photographs while within a starship will not contribute toward mission completion.

  • ...on a(n) {Biome} planet: The player must take the photograph on a [biome] planet within the marked system.
  • ...of a(n) {Point of Interest]: The player must include a particular type of structure in their photograph. Such a structure is marked by approximate waypoint while the mission is actively tracked.
  • ...of a(n) [type of creature}: The player must include a particular type of creature in their photograph.

Raid a Facility[ | ]

The player is tasked with attacking a Point of Interest for the client.

[Stacks with up to 6 other missions of this type - e.g. raiding a depot completes up to 6 of your raid a depot missions]

  • Raid a Depot: The player must travel to the marked Depot (approximate waypoint) and destroy it.
Bug (4.23): Destroying the marked Depot with a starship will not mark the mission as complete, although landing, exiting and being at the location on foot post-destruction will. Please report this bug here.
  • Raid a Planetary Harvester: The player must travel to the marked Operations Centre (approximate waypoint), force its door open, and use its terminal to obtain key information.

Assault a Freighter[ | ]

The player is tasked with attacking a freighter within a Space Fleet and destroying its containers. You find the Freighter by using the pulse engine to "Scan".

Defend a Freighter[ | ]

The player is tasked with defending a freighter by destroying the pirates attacking it.

Repair a Damaged Item[ | ]

The player is tasked with repairing the terminal of an Observatory or Transmission Tower (approximate waypoint) and transmitting diagnostic results to the client. The terminal will have three Damaged Components.

Scan Objects[ | ]

The player is tasked with travelling to an approximate waypoint on the marked planet (with some objects not yet discovered) and scanning unique flora, fauna or minerals for the client using an Analysis Visor.

Rank[ | ]

To get access to each rank of missions the player requires a certain amount of standing with each faction or guild., Most missions reward +1 standing upon completion, though some rank 7 and 8 missions reward +2. You lose 1 standing if you abandon a delivery mission.

Standing[ | ]

  • Rank 1: 3
  • Rank 2: 8
  • Rank 3: 14
  • Rank 4: 21
  • Rank 5: 30
  • Rank 6: 40
  • Rank 7: 60
  • Rank 8: 100

Additional information[ | ]

  • For mission types that utilise approximate waypoints, the Analysis Visor's Target Sweep mode may be used to locate mission objectives if the player has trouble finding them via other means.
  • During the primary mission Patterns in Time, a Gek Cartographer requires players to complete two Gek missions from the Mission Board prior to providing information about their race.
