Explained - Community Decision Making is an explanation page.

Summary[]

This page details how the community is involved in major decisions of the wiki. Editors can propose new rules and guidelines, and also give their opinion during the decision making process.

Starting a Discussion[]

Discussions are always started by the admin team, but any wiki user can propose something for discussion. That way it can be made sure that as many people as possible see it and can give their opinion on the topic.

If you have a proposal which you wish to put to public discussion, post it on the Admin Noticeboard. A member of the admin team will get back to you there as soon as possible.

Please note that civilized space disputes between civs will be handled in a private conversation with one or multiple admins. Public discussions are only intended for broader changes affecting the entire wiki.

Wiki Decisions[]

Large Decisions[]

Definition:

  • Impacts the whole wiki
  • Different editors might have different opinions on a topic
  • Precedence decisions
  • Is in the community's interest

Examples:

  • Technical changes (new extensions, 3rd party scripts and programs)
  • Big formatting changes
  • New infoboxes/new infobox parameters

When there is such a big decision, it will be announced to all logged in users who made an edit in the last 90 days via the notification system in the wiki.

Clicking the notification will get you to the discussion page. Only logged in users are eligible to take part in the discussion. Logged out users can still read the whole conversation, but can't comment themselves.

Each topic will get its own wiki page where it can be discussed by the wiki community.

The notification will stay in place until a decision has been made. The result will also be posted in the "NMS Wiki News" section of the front page.

Discussion[]

Discussions happen in the "Discussion" section of the page.

Please remember to always sign your posts with "~~~~" and use ":" to indent your text if you are responding to someone.

If you are adding a new top-level comment, please create another level-3 section with "===" to keep the discussion organised. For example:

===Opinion===
An editor's opinion on the topic ~~~~

:Reply to the editor ~~~~

::Reply to the reply ~~~~

===Another Opinion===
Another editor's opinion on the topic ~~~~

The discussion phase usually lasts 5 days. This can also include an initial delay when experts on a specific topic need to be consulted or if other discussions are currently running.

If more time is needed, the discussion will be extended. If a consensus is reached quickly, the discussion may be closed after 3 days.

Stay objective and factual. Comments should never attack or harm other users. Repeated violations may be punished with a temporary block and the violator may be excluded from the discussion.

Results[]

After the opinions of the wiki community are gathered and considered, a decision will be posted by the admin team in the "Results" section at the bottom along with an explanation of why the decision has been made. The status of the proposal will also be noted at the top of the page.

There are three result statuses:

  • Accepted – This proposal is officially accepted.
  • Accepted with changes – This proposal is officially accepted with some changes from the original proposal. The changes are listed below the result.
  • Denied – This proposal is rejected. The reason(s) for rejection will be given below the result. The wiki community is still encouraged to explain and defend any remaining disagreement.

Small Decisions[]

Definition:

  • Impacts only a limited number of pages or users
  • Case-by-case decisions
  • Decisions that can be made rationally without a big discussion

Examples:

  • New NMS versions
  • Problems of individual civs affecting only that civ

These decisions will be made by the admin team directly to minimise wait times.
