Want to make one clarification here - the "limit to the first 10 rows" doesn't mean that ONLY those 10 are available. It would show the first 10, but then include a "More..." link at the bottom of the view. If you want to see them all, clicking the link will take you to a page where you can do that.

Avatar for Thamalandis

I already had the argument below and the history. The goal of the list is to show a comprehensive system list. If I only show 10 and demand to open the subpage, I may as well hide the entire table and just hyperlink to the subpage entirely. The table is only useful if its complete. Otherwise it takes up space.

At the same time if the table is shown in full, it shouldn't be in the upper third of a wiki page or it burries information. No one will scroll past that and few use direct links in the navigation bar. This kills an article.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

No, the goal of the CARGO query is to provide access TO a comprehensive list, not necessarily show the whole thing. Showing the full list may make sense if you have 10 or 20 systems for the region. But when you have regions in the HUB, for example, that have all 500+ stars documented, showing the entire list is not the proper solution. And that's why we provide the show-partial option that an editor can use or not use at their discretion.

When the average editor visits a page, they are likely interested in one of the following:

1) has it been claimed, and if so, by who 2) what types of things have been documented for the region 3) the star systems that have been documented

That is why our region pages have the order they do; it provides quick access to what most people want to see.

Page standards provide a structure that editors quickly get used to and expect to see. I understand that you like your pages ordered in a particular way. And if every region page was documented in the same manner and with the same information, our page standards would likely be different.

But they aren't, which is why we have chosen to go with an order that makes the best use of the information we are likely to have available.

Avatar for Thamalandis

If the goal is just to offer said table to open when needed, I'd entirely prefer the "more" link alone without any entries. Just refer to and open the subpage when necessary. It would avoid so many problems with partial spam of tables and loading times.

A random list of 20 artists in the top 500 charts isn't helpful. Just give me the link to the chart or the chart directly. Don't show me a useless crop of it. This seems so pointless. So utterly pointless. How does that random crop info help me.

Aside of the sense behind the shown length and random content of the tables, I'd still prefer if basic information that is important about the region is not moved to the bottom beyond the tables. In this case neighboring regions etc. It's not even long enough to put it beyond the table, all it does is hide the info from users down there.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

The crop is not random - it show the same first XXX number of rows that you would see in the table if you were showing the whole list.

And with CARGO, once you reach 100 rows, an automatic "Next page" link is created. So once you reach that point, you will never see an entire list of documented stars at one time. In short, we are giving editors the option of choosing the initial number of rows to be displayed.

If you want to create a separate page that shows the full list of stars for a region (at least up to 100), you are welcome to do so. Just place the link in the same place on the page that the list would normally be shown (i.e. after the System stats section)

Avatar for Thamalandis

My point is about the purpose not the limitations. The 20 shown (or 100) in order of ID or alphabet or whatever may just as well not be what the person wants, as it is a "random" choice of the systems. By all means both alphabetical, ID or otherwise may not be what the person is looking for. For all intent and purpose it is random for them.

If it creates a subpage at 100 anyway, shows a basic assortment of may or may not be useful systems and the "more" also makes a subpage for the CARGO, then just adding the hyperlink to the CARGO without displaying the table is just as efficent. If you need a show of concept to give people an idea how the CARGO table looks, I guess 3-5 will be more than sufficient to do so.

On either side of the argument for the tables purpose, I see no reason to show most of it, if at all.

Avatar for Celab99

FYI, for region pages, we can limit the table length with great flexibility, for example {{CARGORegionSystems|10}} will limit it to the first 10 rows. I think DD prefers us to stick to a standard layout as we are moving to ensure a broader level of consistency across page types and layouts in the wiki as the size has grown to such a substantial size that its now a large effort for us to manage exceptions and variations. Most of the admins are now managing hundreds of edited page reviews a day so exception layouts cause a fair bit more work on our part.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Limiting the systems page table would be utterly ridiculous and counteract the reason for their existence. Either they show all systems or don't. I wrote the ID's in a list manually beforehand. A random selection of 10-30 systems is likely unhelpful to a wiki user wanting to browse a regions systems.

Information should never be burried below a monstrous table, especially not BASIC information.

The person that created the neighboring region etc. format was ME. I was the first to use it and added it.

Most region pages aren't even remotely that detailed or structured, including the system information highlight list I made long before the RegionCargo List.

To argue that the page doesn't follow the format standard is as such a good thing, it has MORE information. Information I prefer people see and not skip due to a giant table.

So no I do not agree that looking at the page is a problem for admins that browse through it. The page already has extra areas added. As such their order is entirely unrelated and should be based on reader flow.

THIS is your standard:

If you would care to give this page a short review? Chameleon Planet.

Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

If correct, this sounds more akin to a subbiome as nothing was shown that implies a different planet type. So just planets that change surface color every X-steps. Sounds more like a Chromatic Subtype.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Thank you sir, I'll send a note back to the original editor.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Before I forget - do you do the Discord thing? I don't do all the chat rooms, but it does make a good tools for doing IM.

Avatar for Thamalandis

I do use Discord for several things. Alas I don't think I am active enough on this wiki currently to warrant another distraction in my timeline there. So I'd decline joining one for this wiki.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Fair enough - it was more for providing me an IM contact instead of general activity in the wiki, but yeah, I get it.

Avatar for Intothedoor

Hello - I went over here and made a page: Delta Majoris Hilbert Umbra - please feel free to change/edit as you see fit

Avatar for Thamalandis

Done. Also added correct radial measurement for distance to the center (middle of highest vs lowest shown distance when rotating around the circle view).

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Another Biome page change for you to consider if you would? Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

I don't datamine. I fear that is outside of my expertise. Maybe our animal hunters and cartographs can say (in combination with mined data for systems) which of the two assumptions is true.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I'd be interested in your opinion on this page: Space (Biome).

Don't think it would be considered a true biome, but maybe could be referenced as a "subtype Biome" in the same way that Infested is shown.

Thoughts?

Avatar for Thamalandis

It is a subbiome. Every planet has it de facto and it is unrelated to the biome of the planet itself (perhaps less gravity on airless even in space).

It's more a sub-info of the general planet data. So celestial bodies should link to it.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Was looking at the recent changes for Frigate.

The page has this information in two different places on the page:

Hiring:

The fleet can have a maximum of 30 frigates. You can dismiss unwanted frigates using the middle mouse button (consoles excepted).

Additional Information:

Frigates can be deleted from your fleet in the same manner as deleting a tech or item from your inventory (Consoles: holding right joystick / PC: holding middle mouse button).

Normally we would try not to duplicate information on a page; what would you think of changing the hiring sentence to something like this:

"The fleet can have a maximum of 30 frigates, which can be hired or dismissed."

Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

That's an inversion. The second part is under "additional information", if anything that isn't additional and should be solely under Hiring and Firing. That is information pertaining to this subsection. The simple solution is to add the right joystick option to the upper one instead of consoles excepted and remove it from additionals.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I'm good with that as well. I'll make the change. Thanks!

Avatar for ParadigmTheory

Hey, I was just wondering if you knew anything about the "Glitch" True Exotic type that's listed on the Biome - Exotic page alongside the other True Exotics. The entry seems to suggest a True Exotic type that is a combination of randomly selected other True Exotic types (i.e., finding Irri Shells and Ossified Stars on the same planet). Is this the case? I've never experienced anything like this in the game, so I just wanted to make sure I was understanding the entry correctly.

Avatar for Thamalandis

No. But the planet type (Redacted etc.) can have ANY type. So one Redacted planet has Irri Shells, another has the Nanophage. The planet type does not tell you what you find. It is how the OLD exotics worked before they got standardized. You can see it at the old pictures "Gallery (Pre-Visions)"

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Understand your thoughts on the redesign. I have a wide monitor and 30-40% of it is wasted with grey bars left and right. There is a "box in a circle" on the upper left of each page that you can click to expand it, but I haven't figured out how to make that stick yet.

Glad that your notifications issues was indeed that checkbox being unplugged.

Not sure where you're seeing your name in red. I looked at the history of a couple pages and your name seems to be green there. Fill me in? Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

It sticks under preferences appearance. You can chose 3 options, expanded or not, dark mode or not etc.

Avatar for Thamalandis

The bell doesn't show anymore. I have to go to OTHER wikis to get my little orange bell with numbers now to check on this. That's annoying. I also had to preset "recent changes" with "watchlist" as an extra setting to get the correct filter permanently. Not a fan, really.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

The bell is on the bottom left, just above the User icon. The orange bell is now blue, with a white circle showing the number of messages.

Avatar for Thamalandis

It does not change shape in my browser so it uses new code which is not currently supported by mine. I will not change my primary browser for one page, though.

I can see all notifications if I click through the two steps of clicking the bell and clicking the lower "view all notifications" though. Doesn't help me notice anything new unless I actively investigate. It also isn't as eye catching down left like it was top right even if it would work for me. I really never look down on a page. I work with the upper half. I know it is the opposite on mobile phones... for me too. But on PC I do not look down.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Just for the record, if you were to enter the coordinates for the Galaxy centre, what would they be? I'm researching this Euclid issue...

Avatar for Thamalandis

They really need to update the pings for this. I didn't get a message about any post here.

The galaxy center has all "neutral" glyphs for portals (it is the center where all goes and begins) but its coordinate is the neutral plane in the center coordinate (the middle one for the x-y plane).

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Check the Notifications tab on your Preferences (Profile Comment specifically). I had the same issue and something had turned off the web-notify checkbox.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Yes, the x-tienth change to the site code clearly unchecked it at some point. That said... **shudder** the new interface is overloaded. Is this the mobile version? I got bars left and right with a center thing for a mobile phone to easily scroll in its center.

I always find it sad if web pages focus their design on mobile and not check the actual visitors system to offer a fitting solution. Guess we got another broadband approach here.

Also in "history" I count as non existent for some reason. I am red... great change. I am now a named incognito.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

FYI, there is a preference flag you can set to give you a wide screen instead of the narrow one.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

DHarhanWulf is the editor that first made the change to the Region page.

CorvusCorax668 is the editor who used their discovery software to verify the information on shadow stars.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Looks like the edit has put the galactic center coords back in the galaxy page. Trying to decide if they need to be removed again. I looked through both the main Euclid page and the linked Size page, but I don't see those exact coords anywhere.

Am I missing something? Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Would you be able to determine if The Outer Edge is Uncharted or Abandoned (and if so, by which faction)? Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I don't give you enough thanks for your most dependable work in the wiki. You remind me in a way of the old EF Hutton commercials; when Thamalandis speaks, I listen...

Avatar for Thamalandis

I thank you for your trust, but I don't think that is a wise position. There may be times when I make mistaks and I'd rather have people check my work than go of course together. Besides, at this point I mostly do maintenance and small inquiries for the wiki. I don't really add new things. My endgame account is just able to quickly produce results if needed.

I looked at the commercials, the one with the classroom is just... weird. The other ones with grown-up men talking stocks is fine. But that one is at the very least cringe.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I'll take credit for messing up the 1500 on Condensed Stellar Ice. The way it was worded is one reason that bullet points are better for lists than long sentences <g>. Thanks for the catch!

Avatar for Thamalandis

The initila mess was done by 51.6.87.226 as they put Di-Hydrogen inbetween the number and carbon. The rest was just step 2.

Either way the number is back where it belongs.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Would you care to look at the notes Hairy Red left here? Talk:Starship Catalogue - Exotic. Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

I did not check any Exotics since the recent updates. It certainly ain't a new ship, neither in model nor otherwise. The two wings switch down to merge into a large downwing and the small topwing remains. That is a known common visual. No special thing to mark midtier ships etc.

Maybe HG saw the former inventory limit as obsolete since Living Ships got introduced to replace Exotics as special ships. I don't know. A general slice of Exotic tests should work to find out the truth. For now it seems plausible. Inventory is barely 2 more than the known max. Techslots is x2.

Greetings fellow Travelers,

since you upload a Planets on our Territory the EOK Legion ambassador assume that you open and accepted close relation with our civilisation, you will still be a independent civilisation but will be mention on our embassy page as a Foreign Relation. Your research being in the heart of the EOK Legion history, You will be granted the Rank of Researcher of The Fade, a Research center will be built by The Evsky Society on this Planet that is now under your jurisdiction. Next time you want to upload on our territory it will be preferable to go trought the proper administration in order to respect our Naming Conventions.

Kind regards,

The High Council of EOK Legion.

Avatar for EOK-BAKA

yeah i understand that but a couple of week ago i wasnt even playing multiplayer feature, only building things without carring for anything else. A couple of friend join me now and even do i play for 3years at this game it was almost the first time i try multiplayer feature. I didnt know anyrules concerning civ and upload prior that, i was only a lurker on the wiki. we were discussing how we can tag those planet and i shouldnt hav upload to the wiki something that wasnt upload on nms server for sure but i didnt thing that someoone would come for upload things like that and change name even. thx to show me the hard way something that i should hav known, it wasnt necessary but thx anyway.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Naming and Uploads work regardless of multiplayer just not between console and PC. Not sure if that changed with the Multiplayer merge, but there would be a lot of double namings if it did, which would be a terrible idea of HG to create fragments of corrupted date, especially on Wikis.

The second thing is you added insane distances for systems. We talked about the distances and how to measure them accurately which can change by nearly 100ly. If you add massive claims - I noticed another massive one from September I'll check for measurement accuracy later - people will come to see. So if you claim that, the only reliable way to find your systems is by portal, so you need to NAME the planets early or lose them. There are some REALLY annoying names out on the Fade, be happy if its vanilla. There is no point to act salty or dejected over a year old planet you forgot. Further, it has to be logged by name, but can be referred to by any other. Tasyroga got snatched, it still is Alpha Polaris and will remain as such in links on the wiki, even though the page itself is Tasyroga. Nothing stops you from referring to things according to their use ingame.

Also a bit of advice, you seem to name planets by biome etc. Those CHANGE in some updates. Mostly scorched became volcanic, some became swamp, deads tend to change into exotics and exotics chang to other exotics in updates. In our starting region near Otohime we named areas by resources so people in the Grind Age could find it easier. Guess what changed? Naming conventions on those are highly discouraged as they will become a permanent scar of false information once they flip. I would urge you to consider this fact. Naming planets by their characteristics WILL fail in several cases down the line.

Sidenote to our Ospe Major... to have a Major it makes sense to first have a base Ospe or an Ospe Minor or for the body to be a giant in a system to emphasize that.

Avatar for EOK-BAKA

I mean i didnt even care to upload anything, the last time a reroll a character a year ago it was just to try new dlc and experimenting on new glitch build techniques, thats when we decide to make a civ that the uplaod become relevant to me.

at the beginning of the multiplayer i was afraid to even activate it because i see a lot of story of people trolling base of other player so i try to stay hidden under the radar, not even going to the nexus with multiplayer on for not show my build to anyone, that a bit stupid but it was my mind set at the time. at some point i think that i even forget the fact of uplaoding discovery, to much into buildings and not even exploring so no point to upload anything. iam not really salty (maybe a little^^) its just that we were in a middle of a discussion about what to do with planetand you cut the short the discussion by uploading it without even asking anything, i know that they change and evrything but we will update the wiki if it happend, we just needed a way to know wich planet wil be use for what later on.

thx for the advice on Major/Minor planets that gone help determine more accurate name later on.

PS: nice of you to hav put the capital ship you discover in Endenn system, we not gone display it that way thought but the data will be use for sure, have you more info concerning that freighter, like a picture of its cargo to hav more details of its stats and a better sens of its exact color, picture in system tend to alter the real color of it. thx anyway.

Avatar for Thamalandis

It is black with yellow stripes as mentioned. I looked at it with moving sun in static cam. That is confirmed. Also if you wish to move the picture, move it to the ship page. Please make it then.

Freighters have basic random values, so there are no stats to gather. I didn't bother to fight for an interview with the captain, it has no point if you know the name from the hangar flyby.

If you want to see terrible names, fly to the center... or maybe visit Yomi. I literally didn't add the ingame names for two planets but the vanilla. You'll know why when there. ALWAYS upload. Do not risk trolls and vandals.

Avatar for EOK-BAKA

i hav a bit of work structuring the civ for now but its gone be done for sure, let me hav the time to do it properlky please, the red link is there to remember whats need to be done, there is plenty of capital ship to snatch iam sure people doesnt really care about this one for now.

lesson on upload as been learn for sure, thx mate

Pls hold off on reversions, we are doing mass edits across the wiki, and your reversions will cause some disruption, please make a note and change the specific item you have and issue with and NOT a full reversion.

Avatar for Thamalandis

The reversion you mention is 25% of the entire edit and done with good reason. It is not one paragrpah of a site revamp. I do not always have time to copy everything back to the place they need to be if I check them in my time off. I said why I flagged the edit and you reacted to it as requested. I mostly just ignore if you or others replace pictures with those of current versions here and then, but if like in this case the meaning is lost, I will interject in accordance to my time available.

Avatar for Celab99

we are preseed with a critical series of issues that need fixing over the next few weeks, that are yome sensitive. Your cooperation on not fully reverting is appreciated and again requested.

Avatar for Thamalandis

I rarely reverse, don't worry. This event was just bigger. For rework, the only thing I do know is that DDF wanted to move from mixed datatypes to strings being cast.

Avatar for Celab99

Pls connect with us on Discord so we can fill you in to some current challenges. We are both on the NMS WIKI discord server, and we have a wiki admin room in my CELAB Galactic discord server.

Avatar for Thamalandis

I really don't have time Celab. The lags on the wiki were noticeable etc. and I do agree there might be something going on in the background. I'll trust you two on that. If I see your name on an edit, I will assess the situation with more time and try to re-edit. That is all I can do.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I'm sure you've noticed, but the ability has been put back on the search page that allows you to create a new page from the search results. Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

I did not, since I didn't make any new pages / migrations in the last days. But it is good to know I don't always have to crawl to the main page to make one now. Thanks.

Avatar for Celab99

I was asked by a user how to go about getting started to make a civ, and I thought, that is a great question... clearly from the failed and incomplete civ pages we see, a guide would help... so I started a draft of one... would appreciate your input... see Civilized Space - Guide to Setting Up a New Civilization or Company.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Hard to say if I can or should, BUT... don't say universe when you mean galaxy. There is only one simulation (universe) but 256 galaxies.

Avatar for Celab99

Actually I was trying explicitly to use that distinction... I specifically only used universe in that one point, to try to illustrate there are multiple universes (platform/game mode dependent). I rephrased to make it more explicit. Thanks for the suggestion. The page is very drafty right now, so all help appreciated.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Regarding the "travel insane distances" change on Black Hole. Normally I agree with your sentiment. But "insane' really isn't the word that should be used here either. For one thing, in today's politically correct world, it has overtones that are not the best. I believe the change to "large" is a better choice, in all honesty. Thoughts?

Avatar for Thamalandis

I am literally blocked by Fandom to even talk to you outside of my own profile...

Their "confirm E-Mail" scam is a joke. I did click it and it prompts me to register a new account on their page, even though I always confirmed my ID through Twitch or Google. They don't ask for confirmation or register the confirmation of my account through my E-Mail but flat out demand a re-registration. False flag if I ever saw one.

Not sure if others share this "lovely" pressure of the new hoster and owner, but their attempt to consolidate their user data in their own pocket will not endear them to me at all.

Avatar for Pcj

Can you try logging in on https://community.fandom.com and confirm your e-mail there?

Avatar for Thamalandis

Google Account: Redirects to relogin/re-register and doesn't confirm. Twitch Account: Allows Login but Confirmation E-Mail link loads FOREVER and doesn't work.

It sends me to the same menue... E-Mail Options "send confirmation". It is the same as here. And it doesn't work.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Re-used the link today - as I expect the lagging slow servers was them derping yesterday.

Twitch account says: E-Mail confirmed. This page STILL claims it did not. Fandom says yes. So I hope this is just two databanks exchanging the information very slowly... again.

Avatar for Celab99

I had same issue (I had originally set up thru twitch). A few complaints to zendesk and eventually all problems went away... hopefully works for you too.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I guess I'm not sure what the "small" that you are using for the Class parm represents. Is that the inventory size? Is it that the ship itself is small, or what? Fill me in!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

regarding the freighter changes that Celab made. Here's the documentation from the starship infobox:

1) type: type of starship (Shuttle/Fighter/Hauler/Explorer/Exotic/Freighter/Frigate) - will create an automatic category

2) subtype: subtype for Freighters:

(Venator/Imperial/Resurgent/Sentinel/Battleship/Dreadnought/Regular/Derelict)

OR

(Blade/Cargo/Centrifuge/Derelict/Enterprise/Galleon/Hammerhead/Iris/Oculus/Revolver)

3) class: starship class (C/B/A/S)

Avatar for Celab99

FYI you probably will notice a lot of minor changes occurring to your pages. We are trying to get all pages to have the civilized tags and categories to follow a consistent form across the wiki. We are implementing a series of macro code that will auto produce a lot of tables in the future to minimize future pages from becoming outdated as related pages changes/emerge. If you have any questions please reach out to the admins or myself.

Avatar for Thamalandis

I reverted some species pages as you also removed the observed weight/height range. We don't remove information.

Otherwise all looked fine... well aside of 1-2 text things regarding the Forgotten Colonies.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

If you would, please check the latest comment on the Starship Catalogue talk page. A new player is asking about tech slots. We list the ranges for each archetype for regular slots, he is suggesting it would be nice to add the same for tech slots. Would you be willing to tackle that? I trust your starship knowledge on such things. Thanks!

Avatar for Atlantisking1985

"Didn't mind the grammar change topside, but removing the corrected info downside I can't agree with.)" In ref to Planets page. I'm quite confused as to what even happened there. All I did was edit your grammar in the sentence at the top; I didn't touch the bottom part; I don't understand how that sentence was deleted. Sorry about that.

Avatar for Thamalandis

You get a warning during an edit when another is active as your edit copy is at that point out of date. A normal database locks edits in this case.

I expect you made a full edit, got the error and pressed save anyway. To prevent these things make SMALL edits, only edit the section in question and NOT the page. Then both are valid at the same time if they edit different sections.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Friendly reminder to include (and not delete) the Version macro at the top of your pages when creating new ones. Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Quick question on Forgotten Colonies. The current page says it's the NEXT version. We can do two things:

1) change that to say "the current version"

2) make a new page to be the new page and mark that as an archived history page

Lemme know - thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

There were no resets in the universe since Next (aside of Dead planets which are not logged on that page in any of its entries), as such the page is still up to date.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

One of our anon editors has just added "large inventory" stats for the Shuttle starship. This is the first I've heard anything about an expansion. I figure if anybody knows, it would be you. Do you have any insight?

Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

We can upgrade any ship since the important update back yonder regardless of its basic abilities - with a nanite farm to pay for it - but I never heard of large shuttles spawning in themselves. Normally that would imply NEW designs for shuttles since the visual parts are linked to their initial type and size and stats. That was the reason the update was so good, we could upgrade the most beautiful ship. Large ones often look bad due to their extra attachments.

In short:

No, I haven't heard of it and I would roll it back with the request for proof in your stead.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Thanks much - always appreciate your input. Rolled back it shall be!

Hey, I'm the wiki manager for this wiki and wanted to thank you for all your contributions. Fandom is interested in rewarding editors like you with a game (from Steam, etc) or related merchandise, so I'm curious if there's anything you'd be interested in receiving. Let me know.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Thanks for the gesture Pcj, but I am good. I also keep my backlog of games short as I play them a lot before I move on or return to one from before. This way I am covered for years and only react to special new releases.

Please use this offer to reward one more else instead. My motivation to help the wiki or prevent vandalism won't be affected either way.

Keep up the good work.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

When I saw this new ship, I thought to myself, "sure hope Thamalandis gets back on the wiki." I know that when it comes to ships, your information is always accurate and complete. So glad to see you back in the air!

Avatar for Thamalandis

I doubt I will be the one to describe those Poke-Ships in detail... or how to breed them. I bet some player already build an auto shipfarm template somewhere.

I wouldn't mind researching the space anomalies.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Well, whatever you can add will be great. Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

When you make as many edits as I do, occasionally you make an error.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

have added a "color" parm to the star system infobox. Red/green/yellow/blue/black

Avatar for Thamalandis

I did add both infos together into the Spectral Class normally (past Atlas Rises). I take it you separated them to use them for sorting?

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

That will be one benefit. It will also allow, for example, a query of, say, red stars in a particular galaxy. Or if pages for black-hole systems enter Black, then you can get a list of black-hole systems.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

If you check Sea of Onhakitc I've added the new template.

I don't know if showing the four characters is required (my guess is that it isn't) but right now the macro both shows the value and sorts by it (with system name being secondary)

Is this what you had in mind?

Avatar for Thamalandis

The four numbers are the hexadecimal, which will make for an odd sorting if left by themselves. It does work though. It can also be used to kick out older systems with the same ID by telling it to favor the most up to date "version" version for a particular number.

Again, I would have preferred writing the system ID in decimal directly into the system page as an argument |system_ID = XYZ and querry that.

I can live with the hexadecimal though. The row should not be called "Coords" though, it is the System ID

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I believe the sort should work with either decimal or hex values. Since it's the hex value we use/display on other pages, this at least is consistent.

Do you want to have the System ID actually show in the query, or just use it for sorting?

Avatar for Thamalandis

Both won't work, because if I write the system ID in decimal into the Galactic Coordinate system which is used for portal translation... you end up in hellswhere. If it was a HIDEEN querry yes, but not if it is shown. Then someone stumbles over it.

And thus if we querry the galactic coordinates for its last 4 digits, it will be hexadecimal unless a script autotranslates it to decimal.

1) It should be shown, it is an important info. 2) It also should be right next to the alphabetical sorting. 3) It should not be named "Coords4" but "System ID" or "ID" for short.

4) Make it check the "Release" and "Platform" of the system page when it calls for the ID. If the same ID on the same platform exists twice or more, call for the system page that is more current.

Synthesis > Beyond > Abyss > Next > Atlas Rises.

Otherwise the commonly rediscovered and updated regions will DROWN in pointless duplicates.

The only double entry acceptable for the same ID is a different platform!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

OK, check out the results. And by the way, you're welcome <g> There is now a systemid parm you can use. It doesn't care what value you put in it, so if you want to use decimal that's fine.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Looks great and is functional. I also noticed you added a filter to take out outdated systems already. I would have to check the cargocoords script to see if you took my suggestion for the filter, but I appreciate the results either way.

With the addition of the SystemID tag for the system site, I will actually add both. As mentioned before the decimal first as it should be used to sort and the hexcode in brackets behind it. That way people get both the Portal Symbol Hex ID and the correct sorting of the systems. This way people can also easily check which systems of a region are still unaccounted for... if they so chose to pursue them for exploration.

I will think what I can remove or alter for my Key section below in the region. I still like fielding statistics, but I realize you don't want that many infos in your cargo script table I guess. So I will find a reasonable compromise.

We can remove the system links though. Blank name is enough for the keysection now.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Thanks for the note on the Likholu "hacked" star system. At this point, I'm going to let it ride and see how many additional such systems are added to the wiki. My guess is there won't be many. In any case, it does document an obscure corner of the game, in the same way that we have a list of half a dozen "negative galaxies" that were reached via hack.

And on a different subject - what's your opinion of the cargo tables on the starship and multi--tool catalogue pages?

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Question for you on the Starship Catalogue page for Exotics.

Unlike the other types of ships, there are specific (user-defined) divisions. Ball and Squid for starters, and then Ball is broken up into Guppy, etc.

I'm getting ready to convert this particular catalog page to use CARGO queries, and I'm guessing we want to keep these distinctions.

The only way we can do that is to add an entry to the infobox (maybe call it exotictype) where that categorization can be made, and then referenced.

What think you of these choices - are they clear enough?

  • Squid
  • Guppy
  • Mosquito
  • Royal

Thanks!

Our border research may be important in some regard and we got access to all spirals, but I don't plan to put us under any demands for compliance. So I have to decline. Good luck.

Avatar for Gorla

Would you mind taking a look at the User:Halogod35/Sandbox/Mining Beam Upgrade page? It is a work in progress template for the upgrade pages. If you have any feedback or ideas, please share them or you can also edit the page for a more direct approach. Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

I see no real problem there. I trust you two handle this for the modules. I am more than willing to leave the modules to you. All I focus on is keeping out trolls at this point unless content is barren.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

As one of editors that adds a lot of starships, especially freighters - can you a check a few systems to see if the ships you had documented under NEXT are either still there, or NOT still there? Trying to decide if we need to create new Starship catalogue pages now that Abyss has arrived. Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

Aside of the name (and color) the ships didn't change at all AR to NEXT. I highly doubt they will for Abyss. Ships were part of the universe seed I think.

I can recheck some, but I will recheck normal ships. If they didn't change, neither did freighters.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Ships didn't change. Can stay as it is. Delta Polaris is now a Tritium Hub, so I will buy my resource there too. Jelly is in Zumoz.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

OK, that's good to hear. I think the best solution then is to simply change the catalogue pages to indicate they are updated as of Abyss and just keep using them as they are. Thanks for the info.

Avatar for Roytheodd

No offense is taken. I made a big move and I made some mistakes as I did it. We all just want the best for this place and that's what you both are expressing to me. It's all good.

Avatar for Roytheodd

If my Portal edit is so disastrous then go ahead and revert. At least it's known the page needs attention.

Avatar for Thamalandis

I rarely undo things (trolls excluded). If something is wrong I correct it and if something needs work or is useful I merge things. The problem is the immense changes, so clinical edits and merges are impossible as it is harder to compare former to later. It just takes more work.

Just because I describe things in a neutral way doesn't mean it is negative. I know many people expect those empty words, I find them bothersome. I just don't use needless padding.

Let me finish my corrections and some rewordings and look at the result if you think something is gone that was supposed to be there.

Avatar for Gorla

Please do not take in personally, I know from experience that Thalamandis has the best intentions for making any wiki edit, even if the comments do not reflect that. I do not like criticism as any other person and giving someone the benefit of a doubt is not easy (especially over the internet).

Unfortunately a lot of pages still need attention since NEXT, but most of those are less frequently visited to be noticed.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

quick question for you - there is a phrase you use fairly often on region pages that goes something like this:

11 Systems / 0 Traveller / 22 Wealth / 20 Conflict

Would having a macro for this make your job easier? You'd execute it something like this, and it would generate the phrase:

* {{RegionStat|11|0|22|20}}

If you'd find it useful, I can build one up for you. Lemme know - thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

It is just for me. I want a rough overview how much wealth a region has, how dangerous it is etc. I write those infos down behind the general system too on a per system basis.

The Traveller category is even arbitrary. It just depicts which systems have a Traveller in their leading council in the main room.

You rarely break open new regions, unless you track black holes. So I write them down ones and only edit the numbers as time goes on. A macro for that seems unnecessary.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Good enough. I just keep an eye out for standard phrases that seem to be used in multiple places in case a macro would help.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

We've barely gotten into NEXT it seems and now Abyss is coming to replace it. With any luck the reseeding of the universe won't be too bad. I really am beginning to wonder if rebuilding all these index pages each time a "named release" comes along is worth it!

Avatar for Thamalandis

There is a chance it does not reseed the univserse. Sounds just like a content update... maybe even a submarine and more for the currently dead oceans. I won't judge it yet.

Avatar for Gorla

Hi! For clarifying, the Artifact Database is a transcluded page from User:Gorla/Artifact Database‎‎, so it was updated. Please check again, thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

I am not sure you should redirect a main page to your own profile. We don't want the page to die WITH your profile one day. You should restore it to its original source. It also limits misconceptions with the history tab.

Avatar for Gorla

Actually the original source it is on my subpage, as it started as a project of mine, because Ddfairchild didn't want to document all the artifacts in the first place.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Was there even any proof of it being RNG? Let me check the list for name combinations. If none are there it is unique. List is long enough to get a good n-sample.

Avatar for Thamalandis

Yeah seems to be RNG combinations. Well if DDF doesn't care if the list might get lost one day with your profile... I abide. Do as you wish.

Avatar for Gorla

I do have an idea to move it to main space and protect it, I will check with DDF if that is okay. Regarding the RNG part, I will update with some datamined info from the game file I found.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Take a look at your Sogauta page - do you like the up/down arrows in the infobox for the economy buy/sell parms? Trying to decide whether to make this an automatic part of the template or not.

Avatar for Thamalandis

I don't think the values mean what you think they do. BOTH are positive. The negative one is how much LESS the local production goods cost and the other is how much MORE you can sell goods for they need. However both values count for average traderank of the goods and thus are both lower for the top tier traderank 5 which are often worth around 50k.

In short: I wouldn't add the arrows at all.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

good enuf - I was just wondering if they would provide an easier sight reference for which way the number was headed. Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Just a quick explanation why I tend to add the Additional Information section to your starship pages. First, we have tried to make that one of the four standard sections on starship pages. Second, pages that have four sections automatically have the table of contents added, which helps make the page easier to navigate. Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

Ship pages normally aren't remotely big enough to need navigation, they fit half a page. But as you wish, four section enforcement then.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Using something along the line of "Adding a video is fine. However, a signal booster is needed to provide valid coordinates." would better serve the purpose. It provides the same information without the implied backhand to their intelligence.

Avatar for Thamalandis

That would be "potentially misconceived" not "implied". At this point you imply I had ulterior motives. Do not expect me to approve of that. I simply made a short info with a granted unnecessary swearword. Without the swearword even the appeal would be the same. Just 2-3 words less.

"Videos are fine. But build a signal booster to show the coordinate." <- Neutral as hell!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

If I were a new editor in this wiki, I would prefer to receive the second version. As the author, you might not perceive the potentially misconceived "...you stupid newbie", but many fledgling editors would. I encourage you, as one of our current senior editors, to be more of an educator and less of a critic. Take it for what it's worth.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Dude - there is no need for this type of commentary: "(Video... fine. But build a damn signal booster to show the coordinate.)" None of us are perfect - give other editors a break. Thx.

Avatar for Thamalandis

You are not giving a detailed info here DDF. What exactly is the problem in this regard. I am not omniscient.

Aside of the damn - and cursing at our end of the worlds is perfectly fine by the way, we are not the US - I see nothing wrong with the statement. It was another ship added under a region - white named though not linked either to a page - without any coordinate. This is an IP Editor, so they don't even have an account to contact them in. That is when I often write notes to them. Which to be fair would be longer and more sophisticated if they weren't Twitter sized!

The initial text above the ship asks to give a regions coordinate or file it under "missing location" instead. This is to offer clear infor to readers and to prevent bloating of useless names. So I added that as a note for them. The video in theory isn't even a full edit, just a source. Not much was added to the wiki at all. So I said "yeah sure, why not". But it was not a full region location. So I removed the region and filed it under missing.

If that disturbs you I can just leave the edit note out of the loop altogether in the future. No reason why I edit surely helps them more...

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Just as a reminder - all pages need to have the

{{Version|XXX}}

macro as the first line of code.

Also, if you are adding a disambiguation statement, that should be added as the first line after the infobox.

Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I have seen a number of pages with links pointing to a "thermal protection module". We have pages for various upgrades for that, and other page flavors, but no specific page for exactly that. Sounds like we either need to make it an alias (if so, point to what?), rename one of our current pages (if so, which one), or create a brand new page.

What think you?

Avatar for Thamalandis

There is one for (Cold) and one for (Heat). So they didn't focus the link enough. Send the general ones to some Hazard Protection page. The specific ones to (Cold) or (Heat) versions.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Actually, I see a Thermal Protection Module (high temp) but I don't see one for cold. If you look at the screenshots of what's available, the screen shots don't appear to show hot or cold, just "Thermal Protection Module".

The "high temp" is just a redirect to Upgrade Module, so I've added a "(low temp) redirect, plus a plain redirect for "Thermal Protection Module". Thanks!

Avatar for Thamalandis

Make them redirect people not just to the upgrade page but directly to the region on it.

/Upgrade_Module#Hazard_Protection_Modules

Other than that, the staying power on the top one should be removed. That is a general info. Currently I still collect info how they work on the page. So those notes should not be part of the disambiguation page.
