NsmMechanics Nomenclature

Star System Nomenclature is a standard way of naming stars.

Summary

Other than using random names for star systems or just allowing them to retain their original name, there are several naming conventions being used in the No Man's Sky universe.

Galactic Hub Project

The Galactic Hub Project employs a system where star systems are designated as "HUB" followed by a number designating the region. This is followed by a dash, a number drawn from the last element of the systems coordinates, and then a unique user-chose name.

During these early release the HUB used a system where star systems are designated as "HUB-" followed by a letter designating the sentient species occupying the system, then a number drawn from the last element of the systems coordinates and a unique name.

Neo-Stellar Binomial Nomenclature

The Neo-Stellar Binomial Nomenclature emphasizes the Spectral class of a star with a title such as "Caesar" which indicates an F-class star.

Enhanced Neo-Stellar Binomial adds the fourth element of a system's coordinates.

Examples

It was proposed by Chronicleofeuros of the Skaggerrak Refuge.

Odin's Convention

Odin's Convention[1] produces a portmanteau of the Spectral class of a system and the Region containing that system. System names take a root dependent on the Morgan-Keenan classification (e.g. F2, L4), with each classification mapping to a deity from the Egyptian, Hindu, Greek, Celtic, or Norse pantheons. This root is combined with the Region name. The result then takes a suffix and/or prefix dependent on the remainder of the Spectral class i.e. the oddities in the spectrum.

Examples

  • F3pf Spectral class system in the Toswati Instability region: Op-Krishnawati-Ef
